The most famous brands in the US by state

Recently while searching for late-breaking marketing information, I stumbled upon this map of the United States on Tumblr. The colorful map has labels for each state, however they are not labeled not by name but by the most “famous” brand in each state. It was created by graphic artist Steve Lovelace who has created other brand related graphics in the past. His his criteria for what brand would appear on each state was simple:

  • The brand was based in that state
  • It was still in business as of 2013

Once he had created a list of brands for each state, he went through the tedious task of  narrowing down the brands to a single one for each state. His choice of brand was based on his opinion of which one had the largest brand presence. It is important to note that his choices were subjective and difficult in some states because the number of large brands. Take a look at the map he made, then decide if you agree with the brand representing your state:

It is a very interesting study in brand awareness because any other person probably would have chosen different companies to represent each state. As a matter of fact, other people did exactly that. After this map became viral, other people chimed in and created their own map to represent what they thought were the largest brands in each state.
